Supposedly, it really bothered Raymond Burr that Johnny Carson constantly made fun of Burr’s overweight physique on The Tonight Show. It probably didn’t help when Burr’s next TV role after Perry Mason required him to remain sitting the entire time…. Ironside revolved around former San Francisco Police Department Chief of Detectives Robert T. Ironside, who was forced to retire from the department after a sniper’s bullet paralyzed him from the waist down, causing him to use a wheelchair. He subsequently gets the commish to appoint him “special department consultant” so he can go on solving crimes. Burr played the role on NBC from 1967 to 1975; we have the entire first season below.
