The Rockford Files

Someone once called James Garner “the working man’s Cary Grant” – and Gardner said he was just fine by that description. The Rockford Files was supposed to be an “anti-” TV private eye show: everything about Jim Rockford the P.I. was wrong – constantly broke, lived at the beach (in a dilapidated trailer), got punched at least as often as he did the punching… but he was great at talking his way out of trouble. The show was specifically designed as a starring vehicle for Gardner, who basically played a modern version of the Bret Maverick character that made him famous. It aired on NBC from 1974 to 1980; we have 65 episodes below. (BTW: You probably won’t find a better tour of 1970s Los Angeles anywhere on TV.)
