The Mises Circle will meet in Fort Myers, November 4th. I will be one of the speakers. The Mises Institute has a book sale this week. My autographed memoir is available as is my boom/bust book. The bookstore has an extensive inventory of free market and libertarian books.
During the 2016 campaign GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump stated at rally of predominantly white voters but one remark was aimed to black voters in Michigan, “What the hell do you have to lose?” by voting for me. Unimpressed with his appeal, only 9 percent of blacks voted for Trump in 2016.
With a government shutdown a possibility in a few days because of budget deal has not been agreed to yet in the House. Several Republicans are holding up a budget deal because it continues spending at unacceptable levels including aid to Ukraine.
I will make this controversial suggestion for the next presidential election so the federal government will get its fiscal house in order.
America needs a Jewish president. Why? A Jewish president would run the federal government on a “wholesale” instead of “retail” basis.
Jews—and of course other ethnic groups whose cultures emphasize trade and negotiations–are known for trying to get the best deals for their dollars.
My parents were very good at getting the most of their dollars in the marketplace. When you are raised in a family where the breadwinner made a modest income, every dollar counts to provide for the children. I saw my mother in “action” several times where she bargained to save $5 or $10 dollars or more on a piece of clothing or other purchase in the 1950s and 1960s. Dad also had very good negotiating skills as well.
The welfare-warfare state is supported by men and women from every ethnic group and religious affiliation. Let’s get a Jewish presidential candidate who will campaign on the slogan, “I will run the government as if it were my money.” A “wholesale” federal budget would be reality.
(Congressman Davy Crocket—yes that Davy Crockett–eloquently spoke against the welfare state nearly 200 years ago. Every member of Congress should read it.)
How low would the federal budget go? Far enough to be consistent with the Constitution. Here is both a strategy to restore the republic and an agenda from Mr. Libertarian, Murray Rothbard, penned more than 30 years go. Rothbard’s perspective is more relevant today given how far down the “road to serfdom” America has travelled in three decades.
Finally, I hope to live long enough to be invited to the White House for a Sunday brunch of bagels and lox.
