“There is a right way and a wrong way, always choose the right way.”  Abraham Sabrin (1914-2001)

Incredible as it seems, 55 years ago during the tumultuous year of political assassinations and war in Vietnam, I graduated from Hunter College and two months later Florence and I were married. Florence and I met more than 60 years in the West Bronx where we both grew up. We starting dating in July 1965 and the rest is history.

You are reading this column because Florence supported my decision to become a full time doctoral student in 1972. One thing led to another…my college teaching career beginning in 1985 and my New Jersey gubernatorial campaign in 1997, all of which I write about in my memoir. Without her support I probably would not have become a “public intellectual.” She has been my soul mate and I dedicate my memoir to her.

I asked Florence what she wants for our anniversary and did not hesitate…”I want your story to be read by as many Americans as possible and learn about your incredible journey.”
